Many possums on the Gold Coast reach the roof from a tree. A gum, palm, poinciana or fruit tree with branches near the gutters is an easy ladder. Once the roof is sealed, a tree guard stops the possum from using that tree to get back onto the roof.
A tree guard is a smooth band of metal sheeting wrapped around the trunk, usually about a metre high and a couple of metres off the ground. Possums cannot get a grip on the metal, so they cannot climb past it. The guard is held in place with fasteners that allow the trunk to grow.

A tree guard only helps if the tree cannot be reached another way. If branches from a neighbour's tree or a fence line touch the roof, the possum will use those instead.
